With over 35% of Franklin College students participating in varsity sports, Franklin College has a proud tradition of success within the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and the NCAA Division III, including several national playoff appearances and HCAC all-sports championships in both men’s and women’s sports. WEEKLY ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

 

Congratulations to the women’s basketball team on winning the Heartland Athletic Collegiate Conference championship tournament! Franklin College defeated rival Hanover College 80-73 in the HCAC tournament championship game on Feb. 27. The Grizzlies, who were also co-regular season conference champions, received an automatic bid into the 2010 NCAA Division III tournament. The Grizzlies (21-6 overall) will take on the host Illinois Wesleyan Titans (26-1) in the second game of the first round on Friday, March 5, at 8 p.m. Central Time. For more information about the Grizzlies tournament run, please click here. Good luck Grizzlies!!
 
The Franklin College women’s track and field team  successfully defended its team championship in the Hoosier Buckeye Invitational indoor meet at Rose-Hulman on Saturday, Feb. 20th.

The Grizzlies totaled 115-1/2 team points, edging Mount St. Joseph by eight and host Rose-Hulman by 14 in the competition, which featured all nine Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference member schools. The Grizzlies were led by Junior distance runner Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown H.S.) captured first place in two events – the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.03 and the mile run in a Rose-Hulman track record time of 5:09.54. Sophomore Shelby Johnston (Indianapolis, Ind./South Putnam H.S.) was first in the 55-meter hurdles with a Hoosier-Buckeye meet record time of 8.79 seconds. To see the meet’s complete results, click here
 
On the men’s side of the invitational, Franklin College finished second with a total of 106 points (behind Rose-Hulman’s 164-1/2). Freshman Georard Mitchell (Indianapolis,Ind/Howe H.S.) was first in the long jump with a top attempt of 20 feet, 8-1/2 inches, a Hoosier-Buckeye meet record effort. The Grizzlies’ other top finish was by their distance medley relay team of sophomore Kinley Weber (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln H.S.), sophomore Jonathan Miller (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian H.S.), freshman Brandon Litz (Monrovia, Ind./Plainfield H.S.) and junior Jake Hojnacki (La Porte, Ind./H.S.) with a time of 11:18.13.  To see the meet's complete results, click here
